About The Reinforced Canine

Reinforcement-based training from the Loop to Calumet

The Reinforced Canine works to a stated philosophy built on five words: communication, respect, choice, safety and science. Its diagnosis of most client problems is a communication one — "Most canine-human conflicts start with miscommunication. Dogs understand more than you can imagine, so let us teach you how to talk to each other." On safety it is explicit that learning depends on it: "No one can learn unless they feel safe. At the very least, we want your dog to feel safe, and at the very best, we're aiming for your dog (and you!) to have fun during training."

Programs

The site offers private training, published price packages, and board & train, with a New Clients page as the entry point and a service area given as the Loop to Calumet.

Method in their own words

The trainer's own summary is "Reinforcement drives behavior." Two principles shape how sessions run. On choice: "We listen to the choices your dog is making to tell us how they're feeling. We give you training choices that will best work for you and your dog." On science: "We use research to inform our training protocols. When new research is published, we fold that into our knowledge-base and pass the latest onto you for the benefit of your dog."

Background

The about page names Elizabeth Emelene Jefferis and describes her as a certified professional dog trainer. She writes that she can "work with all dogs and breeds, but I specialize in starting puppies and high-drive working-line breeds that others find 'too much'" — a useful distinction for owners of working lines. The account she gives runs from a family horse farm in rural southeastern Pennsylvania, through competing on ponies and horses, to New York University, where she graduated cum laude with a BFA, and corporate work in New York that she left in June 2001.
