About PAWS Chicago Training Center

Class-based training from Chicago's no-kill shelter

PAWS Chicago runs a public dog training program alongside its adoption, spay/neuter and no-kill shelter work. Classes are offered in two formats — virtual classes to "train with your dog from the comfort and safety of home," and in-person classes at the organization's Lincoln Park Training Center, which the site says run "with enhanced safety protocols."

Classes

Level 1: Basic Obedience and Manners teaches "how basic cues can help with good manners and leash etiquette," for dogs aged 5 months and up. Polite & Playful Puppy is aimed at puppies aged 10 weeks to 5 months and covers becoming "happy, healthy, polite — & housebroken." Beyond the foundations, the schedule includes Tricks Level 1 & Level 2, The Cautious Canine for "training and confidence building for your fearful pup," Relaxing Your Dog's Reactivity, described as positive reinforcement training for a reactive dog, Nose Work for dogs "who love to explore the world through their nose," and Separation Anxiety Solutions, "a class dedicated to helping anxious pups feel more secure."

Worth knowing

The class list is notable for covering fear, reactivity and separation anxiety as standalone group courses rather than routing every such case to private work, and registration for each runs through the site. The training center sits inside a broader organization that also publishes owner resources on dog behavior, aging and settling a new dog at home, and offers ongoing training and support to its adopters.
