About Blitzen Canine Academy Inc

Classes from puppy preschool to advanced agility

Blitzen Canine Academy works from 8913 W Dralle Rd in Frankfort under the line "Helping you unleash your dog's inner spirit!" Its class menu is published on the site: Puppy Pre-School, Rally Obedience, Beginner Agility, Intermediate Agility, Advanced Agility, and Nose / Scentwork, with separate schedules for agility and obedience and for puppy preschool. The home page summarizes the range as "From Puppy Pre-School to Advance Agility, Blitzen offers it all!"

Training philosophy

The home page states the method and the argument behind it: "We will be motivating your dog through various positive reinforcement methods rather than heavy corrections. It is now known that abusive, severe and often extreme training methods actually CAUSE behavioral problems during your dogs training." It adds that such methods "may have a lasting negative psychological effect on your dog's personality and attitude," and that "We do not advocate abusive corrections or scare tactics when training." Reinforcement is treated as individual — "For some, it may be a reward in the way of a small treat, for others it may be their favorite toy and for others praise from their handler will be incentive enough" — and the academy says "we try to tailor the training sessions for your needs" because "not every training method works with every dog and handler."

Where the name comes from, and who founded it

The about page tells the story behind the name. It says Blitz was "imported from Germany in 1989 to be trained and used as a working Police Dog" but arrived very ill and was found to have an autoimmune disease that ruled out police work; the writer, then "working as a full time trainer for Patrol Narcotic Dogs," kept him. "Blitz in German means 'LIGHTNING'," the page notes, and it says the academy lost him on the 4th of July in 1999. The page closes with the founder's own line: "Blitzen Canine Academy was founded by Pam Juliano, a Certified Trainer for Patrol Narcotic Dogs, who has been competitively training and showing dogs since 1972." It credits her with "numerous titles in agility, obedience, tracking and Rally-O; including several high in trials and dog world awards," and says she "is a licensed judge for AKC, UKC, and CPE agility trials." The site also runs a Blitzen Breeding section alongside the classes.
