High Caliber Labradors is a small family-owned kennel near Lennox in southeastern South Dakota, an area it calls "Pheasant Country." It breeds and trains pointing Labrador retrievers aimed at being successful hunting companions and test dogs as well as family pets, and offers professional retriever training alongside its litters.

Training programs

The Puppy Head Start Program, for puppies from 8 weeks to 6 months, gives socialization and an introduction to later training drills, building confidence and enthusiasm. Gundog Training is a 3-4 month program covering obedience, collar conditioning, force fetch, introduction to guns and birds, and single marked retrieves on land and water, plus quartering, find, flush or point, and retrieve to hand in the upland. Hunt Test Training, for dogs working toward APLA titles, runs a minimum of 5 months with extensive bird work and marks.

Details and rates

Training length depends on each dog, water work depends on weather, and the kennel recommends starting at 6 to 7 months of age with a customized program. Training pricing is by phone. Hunt test handling is $50 per test day and hunt test traveling $75 per test. Birds, food and heartworm, flea and tick preventatives are included in training fees.
