Southpaws Playschool is a climate-controlled, free-range dog daycare in South Austin, at 2235 South Lamar Blvd in the 78704 zip code. Dogs play in three groups sorted by play style, personality and size, with outdoor breaks, a midday nap and a report on each dog's day.

Training and behavior help

Southpaws University runs manners and obedience classes, seminars and day training. A crate training program for puppies or adult dogs covers crate training, potty training and socialization, and private behavior consultations are open to the public. Puppy Parties welcome puppies 8 to 16 weeks old with their first vaccinations. Clients also get free behavioral and nutritional support, and staff offer pet sitting and dog walking in 78704. Crate-free overnight boarding is limited to long-term daycare clients.

The owners

Sonya Wilson has been involved in dog training since 1990 and holds a BS in Elementary Education from Texas A&M. She runs Southpaws with her husband, Tim Smith; both are certified in Emergency Pet First Aid and Disaster Response and have studied canine behavior and off-leash play group management.
