About ADOPT Training for A Sound Beginning

The training arm of a Naperville shelter

A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter describes itself as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that has been “changing lives since 1989” and says it has “helped more than 30,000 dogs and cats find loving, forever homes.” Its classes run under the name Training for A Sound Beginning, and the site says A.D.O.P.T. “has partnered with Positive Solutions for A Sound Beginning to offer 100% positive reinforcement training for your animal companion using only gentle methods.” Classes are held at the A.D.O.P.T. Training Center at 425 Industrial Drive Unit 133A in Naperville, which the site places just west of the shelter itself.

The class list

The published schedule covers Puppy Class for polite greetings, leash walking and recall; Puppy Play for Life for behavior and socialization taught by a certified trainer; Basic Obedience; Building Blocks of Behavior, aimed at coping with situations that cause anxiety, fear or arousal; Feisty Fido and Feisty Fido: In the Real World for leash reactivity; Teen Manners for dogs 6 to 24 months old; Tricks, Tricks, Tricks! working toward AKC novice, intermediate and advanced titles; Focus Class – Walks Like a Dream; and a Therapy Dog Prep Class covering Pet Partners requirements and touching on Alliance and TDI.

Who can attend

Classes are open to all dogs, not only shelter alumni: “Our classes are open to all dogs with up-to-date vaccinations.” Proof of current rabies, distemper/parvo and Bordetella is required. The site says classes are led by “experienced, certified trainers who use humane, force-free methods” and that rates are competitive with discounts for shelter alumni and community members in need, but it does not publish a price list. Classes without a listed start date can be joined at any time by picking a start date at registration, and every class taken supports the shelter’s rescue and rehoming work.
