About Heartland Dog Training Center

A nonprofit foundation

Heartland describes itself as “a non-profit training and education foundation on Peoria's Northeast side,” at 6818 N. Galena Road. It describes a facility “nestled back in the trees – far from any highway” with “plenty of flat, frequently mowed, outdoor grassy space for dog training,” a “full handicap-accessible, regulation size, obedience ring in our heated/air-conditioned building,” and “a fully fenced outdoor area where you can come and work on any training problems that you are experiencing.”

The class ladder

Classes run as a sequence with prerequisites, and fees are published on the site (non-refundable, per the site's own wording; confirm current rates directly). Puppy is listed at $70 over six weeks, for small breeds 3-5 months and large breeds 3-6 months. Beginners Obedience is listed at $100 over eight weeks for dogs six months or older. Intermediate is listed at $55 over six weeks and requires Beginners Obedience first. Rally is listed at $60 over six weeks and requires both Beginners and Intermediate.

What each class covers

Of the puppy class the site says it is “designed to explose your puppy to many new and different situations,” adding that “socialization plays an important role in having a well-mannered adult dog, one that accepts new experiences without fear,” and that it is “a family type class and everyone is invited to come and watch.” Beginners Obedience is described in terms of an outcome: “you can expect your dog to walk at your side without pulling and to sit when you stop” and to “stand quietly while being groomed, petted, or at the vet's office.” Intermediate adds “more advanced work… teaching your dog how to be a Canine Good Citizen, how to walk with a loose leash, hand signals.” Rally is described as “a cross between Canine Good Citizen and the world of obedience.” Each is a one-hour class. The site also runs an Amazon wish list for supporters.
