About Now and Zen Dog Training

Now And Zen has been practicing in Brevard since 2002 – its own words are "We are certified, and veterinarian approved, and have been practicing in Brevard since 2002" – and it describes what it does as wholistic training solutions for clients across Western North Carolina.

A stated position on tools

This business takes a public stand that most do not. Its home page carries a section headed Advocates Against Shock Collar Training and quotes the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's recommendation that only reward-based methods be used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems. The stated mission is mutual understanding between dogs and their humans "thru the use of compassionate force free training methods", with philosophies based on effective leadership and scientific method.

Coverage and format

The services page publishes the catchment: Transylvania, Henderson, Buncombe and Jackson counties, including Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, Lake Toxaway, Sapphire, Cashiers and Highlands. Long-distance clients can be taken by virtual session. Hours are Tuesday to Friday 9 to 6 plus Saturday, a free phone consultation is offered first, and travel outside the Brevard area carries a fee.

Programs and credentials

The published programs include a Whole Puppy Program, AKC S.T.A.R. puppy work, and semi-private Canine Good Citizen work with testing. The trainer, named in client accounts on the site as Nan Long, is described as holding professional certification with the CCPDT as a Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed, and as a member of the Pet Professional Guild and the Association of Professional Dog Trainers and a supporting member of the IAABC.
