About Urban K-9 Dog Training

Urban K-9 works out of 314 Carroll St and, by its own description, runs in two places at once: Brooklyn, NY and Monmouth County, NJ. What it sells in Brooklyn is private in-home training, day training and group classes, and the site is unusually direct about what each of those costs.

What you can book

The published menu is behavior training, puppy training, day school, board and train, boarding, group classes and online or virtual training. Behavior training is framed as the right choice when there is a specific problem and the owner wants to be involved in fixing it. Puppy training is described as starting the day the puppy comes home, covering crate training and housebreaking, nipping and biting, and basic manners and commands, with early socialization encouraged through puppy class alongside private lessons.

Day training and board and train

Day training runs while the owner is at work: one hour a day, three to five times a week, on a program built around the individual dog, and deliberately in and around the home environment because that is where the problems start. The week ends with an owner session to hand the training over and coach handling. Board and train is open only to clients already enrolled in or finished with a training package; the dog lives and socializes in a trainer's home rather than a kennel.

Published rates

Basic obedience in Brooklyn is $175 an hour, with three lessons for $500, five for $800 and ten for $1,500; Queens and Manhattan are priced higher. Day training in Brooklyn is $1,700 for ten trainer sessions plus three owner follow-ups. Board and train is $2,750 for two weeks and $1,000 for each additional week. Live virtual lessons are $65 per half hour, and the site recommends a pre-puppy FaceTime or Zoom call before a puppy even arrives.

Skills taught

The obedience list is concrete: heeling on leash, come when called, sit, down, place, off, leave it, drop it, hand target and eye contact.

What they can help with

Early socialization, house-training and first manners for young dogs.
