Overview
About Operation Delta Dog
Service dogs for veterans, from Hollis
Operation Delta Dog is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with its administration office at 19G Clinton Drive in Hollis. Its mission is to reduce veteran suicide rates by rescuing homeless dogs and training them to be psychiatric service dogs for veterans living with PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and military sexual trauma (MST). The organization was founded in 2010 to address veteran suicides and overflowing animal shelters at the same time.
How the program works
Dogs are rescued from shelters and trained as highly skilled service dogs. Each dog is carefully matched with a veteran, and training is customized to the needs of both. The service dogs learn specific tasks that help mitigate symptoms, from interrupting nightmares to providing a calming presence in stressful situations. The program is provided at no cost to veterans. Graduates report better sleep, more social engagement and a reduction in symptoms.
Getting involved
Veterans can apply for a service dog through the organization. Supporters can foster or adopt a Delta Dog, volunteer, donate or attend fundraising events.
