A working mind in Austin

K9 Workingmind, run by Training by Tara LLC, trains dogs at two locations in east and north Austin. Its philosophy is "See them. Hear them. Help them." The team trains based on how dogs communicate with each other, following their natural instincts and keeping them in a "working mind" that makes them more focused and calm, and it helps owners understand what drives their dog's behavior.

Classes and sessions

Group sessions are 6 week curriculum classes in behavioral training from beginner to extreme, plus therapy, scent and agility classes, and owners pay for the curriculum rather than by the hour. Specialty classes focus on skills such as reactivity, scent work or communicating with a differently-abled dog. One-on-one sessions of 30-60 minutes address specific issues and can take place in your home. Other options include stay and train, service and therapy dog training, on-demand webinars and seminars. T-DAWG, the Texas Differently Abled Working Group, offers 60-minute sessions for deaf, blind, senior and amputee dogs, using a touch and scent communication system Tara developed in 2008. The team also runs a shelter program and the Stepped-In community outreach program.
