Shelter-run classes in Sarasota
The Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) is a private nonprofit that runs a no-kill shelter at 2331 15th Street in Sarasota. Alongside adoptions, fostering and pet therapy programs, it offers K-9 Obedience Training Courses in the Training Center at its facility. The group courses are taught by experienced trainers and use positive training to strengthen the bond between dogs and owners, and HSSC adopters get a discount.
Courses and fees
Basic Obedience 1 uses positive reinforcement to teach sit, down, come, stay and walking on a leash, for dogs 16 weeks and older, in six one-hour weekly classes capped at 10 dogs; the fee is $125, or $100 for adopters. Basic Obedience 2 (CGC Prep) builds toward the Canine Good Citizen certificate with skills such as meeting a friendly stranger and walking through crowds, for dogs six months and older, at $180 or $150 for adopters. The Pet Therapy Training Course prepares dog and handler for HSSC's Pet Therapy Program over six classes ending in an evaluation, for $240 or $210 for adopters, plus a $100 graduation fee covering a shirt, bandana and ID badge.
