About Backwoods Retriever Training

Duck dogs and upland hunting

Backwoods Retriever Training in Paragould was created by Garrett Meier and specializes in training duck dogs, from a basic gun dog up to an advanced hunting retriever. The program is built around waterfowl hunting and upland hunting, with the stated aim of turning a dog into "a polished duck dog and hunting participant."

How Garrett trains

Garrett works from the view that "not all dogs are created equal" and so cannot all be trained the same way, and he has developed his own techniques to bring out each dog's individual potential. Owners are brought into parts of the training so the dog and handler learn to work as a team, which the program credits with strengthening the bond between them.

Obedience too

For owners who are not looking for a hunting companion, Backwoods also offers obedience training for retrievers and obedience classes for larger breed dogs. The kennel can hold up to 16 dogs at a time.
