About Lightning Flash English Setters

A field operation, not a class school

Lightning Flash English Setters is a breeding and training operation on Judson Street Road at Canton, and it describes itself in one line on its own channel: "40 Years of breeding, training, trialing, and hunting English Setters. Located in Canton, NY Specializing in Dog Training of all hunting breeds." That last clause matters – the training side is not restricted to the dogs the kennel breeds.

It is worth being clear about what this is and is not. Ask directly about classes, facilities and prices. An owner looking for a puppy class or help with a reactive dog on a leash in town should ask whether that is work it takes on. An owner with a pointing dog, a retriever or any other hunting breed, who wants field work, is.

What the work looks like

The business publishes its training as a weekly rhythm on its own grounds rather than as a program with levels. Its posts show sessions run by two generations of the same family – "grandfather and grandson, side by side, during one of our weekly training sessions" – and describe the goal as "turning instincts into precision." Dogs reared by the kennel are followed into testing: one is recorded taking a maximum score of 112 and a Prize 1 in a North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association natural ability test hosted by the Finger Lakes chapter, working a pheasant and a wild woodcock in the same track.

The breeding side runs on champion field pedigrees rooted in the Grouse Ridge line, and the kennel's own long-time house dog is described as a descendant of Grouse Ridge Reroy.

The trainer, and how to reach them

The business's own posts name the trainer only by first name – Styles – as the handler in the field and the owner of the kennel's long-time house dog, and the page publishes a matching email address. Ask about credentials if they matter to you.

One practical note for anyone trying to make contact. The web address the business prints in its own videos, lightningflashsetters.com, is no longer its site. Its Facebook page is live and current, and that page carries the street address.
