About Milwaukee Dog Training Club

The oldest dog training club in the Midwest

Milwaukee Dog Training Club is a nonprofit club founded in 1929 and describes itself as "the oldest dog training club in the Midwest." It was long based behind the old Wisconsin Humane Society site, and in 2025 opened a new indoor location on Cornell Street in Milwaukee. The club describes itself as "an inclusive nonprofit creating better relationships between dogs, their handlers, and the community."

Classes

The club offers obedience, agility and flyball classes along with "many other fun events & activities," across a range "to meet the needs of dogs and owners of all experience levels." It is licensed by the American Kennel Club and its training program is based on AKC trial rules and regulations – a structure the club says "not only permits you to enter American Kennel Club competitions (if you so desire), but also develops a well-mannered dog for everyday urban living." For members pursuing titles, the training is described as preparation for AKC obedience trials, rally obedience, therapy dog certification (Alliance Therapy Dog) and Canine Good Citizen testing.

Membership and community

Instruction comes from volunteer club members – "a group of experienced and knowledgeable dog enthusiasts serving as instructors" – and visitors are welcome at all training sessions. Membership is open to adults 16 and over and accepts both purebred and mixed-breed dogs aged 6 months and older. The club states that it "prides itself in promoting responsible dog ownership and care by offering the Milwaukee community low-cost, much needed dog obedience classes," and publishes a non-discrimination statement covering breed as well as the usual protected classes. Dogs and owners come from Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, West Allis, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay and surrounding communities.
