Background
McEwen grew up around animals – "My dad is a retired veterinarian, and my mother was a zookeeper" – and
worked in the veterinary field before apprenticing under local trainer Kimm McDowell and showing
Beagles and Labradors. She began training for Paws With a Cause, "a national nonprofit that trains
assistance dogs for people with disabilities, in 2002", and writes that during that time she "worked
with well over 800 individual dogs". Many of those clients "couldn't physically hold a leash, or give a
treat effectively", some communicated through sign language, and some "were unable to use their hands,
and only had their voice to control their dog." She also "developed course curriculum for CATCH
Trainer's Academy in New York."
Approach
Her stated method rests on three beliefs formed over ten years of assistance-dog work: "1) Every dog is
different. 2) Every client is different. 3) Every situation is different."
Booking
The contact page carries a standing notice: "Due to heavy volume, I will be in touch in 5-7 days. I am
currently scheduling 3 to 4 weeks out."
