About Pawsitive Training Zone

Classes for manners, and a strong scent-work line

Pawsitive Training Zone runs from 5965 IL-97 in Pleasant Plains, west of Springfield. Its class list is laid out page by page in the site navigation: Nose Work, Good Manners Training, a Therapy Program, Rally Training and Canine Good Citizen, plus an events calendar.

Nose work

Nose work gets the fullest description on the site, and it is pitched at every dog rather than a specialist few – "a fun activity for all size, breed and age of dogs." The page explains that specific essential oils are used and that dogs start by searching through items like boxes to find the target scent, with those searching skills then carried into other places such as parks. The site's stated reason for running it is that it is stimulating and "builds confidence in dogs," which makes it a reasonable option for a soft or under-confident dog as well as a busy one.

Good manners and therapy work

Good Manners Training is described as being for puppies and for mature dogs that need work on everyday manners, and the site names Sandra Carbonell and Kim Dykstra as the co-instructors for that session. The skills listed are recall, leave it, walking nicely on a leash, and staying in a sit or a down – framed around being able to take a dog to new places and have guests in the house. Therapy Dog training is described as newly offered, preparing dogs for therapy dog testing and for visits to places such as children's programs, hospitals and nursing homes.

Where it sits

The site says Pawsitive Training Zone is located on the premises of Kinners on 97, a separate business it credits with day care, aquatics and more – so day care and swimming are the host site's offering, not this trainer's. Merchandise and gift certificates are sold through an online store. Contact is by email or the form on the site.
