About Play N Stay Pet Camp – South Wheeling
Play N Stay Pet Camp's South Wheeling location is the company's newest and largest facility, at 41 – 40th Street in Wheeling, West Virginia. As with its sister site, it is worth being clear about the shape of the business: this is a dog daycare, boarding and cat boarding facility first, run by a company whose training offer is a structured puppy program rather than an adult obedience school.
What is here
The South Wheeling building opened in 2022 and is described as the company's newest and largest, laid out in specialized zones so it operates like several smaller facilities under one roof, with a staff of 20. The site lists multiple climate-controlled indoor play spaces, more than 10,000 square feet of outdoor turfed play yards, playground equipment and pools, loft boarding with real beds, and private cat condos for its Kitty Camp side. Drop-off and pick-up run seven days a week but by appointment only, in morning and late-afternoon windows, and the lobby is closed on all major holidays – overnight guests are fully staffed on those days, but there are no collections or drop-offs. Current bordetella, distemper and parvo, and rabies records are required.
The training on offer
Training at this company means one thing above all: Puppy School, its all-day Puppy Daycare and Development Program. The premise is that the socialization window closes before most owners can get a puppy out safely, so the puppy is instead brought into a supervised environment for the day – structured naps, play, and potty-training routines, with handling exercises and mock veterinary exams so that being examined is ordinary later, exposure to new people, puppies and adult dogs, work on crate tolerance, and basic manners including sit, wait, leave it, back and off. The site treats house-training as a joint effort and asks owners to hold up their end on crate manners at home.
Group play here is managed rather than just watched. Dogs are assessed before joining a group, matched by size and temperament, and handled by staff who have completed the company's own training program – "Our staff complete 300+ hours of training and testing before they are certified to run groups at Play N Stay." The company's distinguishing claim across all its sites is that it is "LOCALLY-OWNED & OPERATED by a TRAINER!". Private training sessions can be booked as an add-on through the Pampered Preferences form on the Express Check-In.
One thing to check before you count on Puppy School here
The company's puppy-program page gives an enrollment instruction that names two of its three locations: "Call your location of preference (STC 740-695-2200/WHG 304-242-2200) and ask to enroll!" The South Wheeling number is not in that line, even though this location's own page carries the company-wide puppy training banner. That may be nothing more than a page that was not updated when the third site opened in 2022 – but if Puppy School is why you are calling, ask specifically whether it runs at South Wheeling or whether you would be enrolling at Elm Grove.
Getting there
41 – 40th Street, Wheeling, WV 26003, reached from I-470 exit 1 and then Jacob Street; the site's own directions end with a landmark rather than a street sign, which tells you something about how easy it is to drive past.
The same company, three addresses
Play N Stay Pet Camp runs three facilities and one website between them. Two are in Wheeling, West Virginia, and the third is at 67700 Airport Road in St. Clairsville, Ohio, which is a different state and a different location. If you are calling, use the number for the location you want – they are separate lines, and the site directs inquiries by location rather than through a central desk.
