About Shelmar Kennels
Board and train on the Katy prairie
Shelmar Kennels is a board and train kennel in Katy, owned and operated by Martin and Shelly Bell on 20 acres just outside Old Town Katy, fully enclosed by an 8-foot fence. The kennel says it was established over 20 years ago, and the owners are the only ones who train the dogs. The grounds are designed like a dog park, so dogs learn around the distractions they meet in daily life, and swimming and retrieving in the pond are part of training.
Programs
Board and train courses run 3, 4 or 6 weeks, covering obedience, housebreaking, house manners and behavior problems such as jumping, leash pulling, door charging, dog fighting and running away. Shelmar also takes on rescue dog training and behavior modification and works with many rescue organizations. The owners follow up with families after training so the behavior lasts. Boarding is offered for dogs Shelmar has trained, including recovery boarding after surgery.
Visiting
The kennel is at 28028 Beckendorff Rd. Visits are by appointment only, and it is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and holidays. Call (281) 371-2554.
What owners say
One owner whose bloodhound puppy did the 4-week session wrote that "the results were amazing," with follow-up appointments to get the family used to the commands.
