About United States Veterans Service Dogs
Service dogs for veterans
United States Veterans Service Dogs (USVSD) is a nonprofit headquartered in Folsom that trains and places service dogs with veterans. Its mission is to help veterans return to a new "Normal" with specially trained dogs that support them with the effects of mental and physical disabilities.
What the dogs do
USVSD trains dogs to help veterans cope with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries and other invisible wounds of war, and to assist with mobility and hearing complications. PTSD dogs are trained to offer a calming presence in high-stress situations, and mobility dogs help with tasks such as retrieving items. Veterans receive their service dogs free of charge and join a community of fellow veterans and volunteers.
How it began
USVSD was founded in 2018 by Cody Bellanger, then acting CEO of Southern Diabetic Retrievers, who saw a new purpose for dogs career-changed from that program as mobility and PTSD service dogs. The organization later started a breeding program and a puppy raising program so that dogs entering training get the best possible start. Cody Bellanger serves as CEO.
