About A Leg Up K9

Program

A Leg Up K9 is built around immersive board-and-train, headlined by a 2-week off-leash obedience program. The trainer (identified only as Jake via the site's contact email) pitches it as fixing "any and all problems you are having" while building a positive working relationship "through clear communication." That framing, plus the off-leash and communication emphasis, places it in the balanced-training camp rather than a purely treat-based approach.

Setting & experience

The operation runs from a facility in Monroe, OH on 2.5 fully fenced acres, serving the I-75 corridor between Cincinnati and Dayton, which makes it convenient for owners across both metros who prefer a send-away program over weekly classes. The site claims over 15 years of experience working with owners and their dogs. It does not list specific professional certifications (no CPDT, IACP, or similar) or the trainer's full name and detailed credentials, so prospective clients should confirm those directly. The single-focus, immersive format will suit owners wanting a reliable off-leash recall and obedience reset more than those looking for puppy socialization classes.

What they can help with

Calming a dog that barks or lunges at other dogs or people while on leash.
Sit, stay, recall and reliable commands, from beginner to advanced.

We adopted our eight weeks old Australian Shepard/Boxer mix from SAAP 4 years ago. With his energy, we quickly realized that we were not able to train him on our own.

Jake came to our house (free of charge) and explained everything that he could teach our dog. To my surprise, my ten-year-old son sat through the conversation, asked Jake numerous questions and Jake patiently explained everything for my son to understand. After Jake finished his explanation, he brought his own dog into our front yard, and showed us numerous things he would teach our dog (plus some cool things my son was thrilled to see)!

When our dog returned from Jake’s, he was so well trained; we had to quickly catch up to what he knew! We did have to ensure we remained consistent in his training because just like a kid, he would try to push boundaries.

We welcomed our baby boy into the world March of last year, and our dog is so patient with him. Without Jake’s training, I would be afraid that the dog would be too energetic and rough for our toddler.

Over the past four years, I have recommended Jake to several other families, and everyone was happy with the results. If we decided to adopt another dog, Jake would be our first call.

We sent our 7 month Doberman, Baron to Jake for a two week obedience training course! When he came home he was so well trained and we were so happy with how Jake worked with him and us. He goes back to “visit” and get refresher time when we go on vacation. So happy with A Leg Up K9! Thank you Jake for all you did for us!

My family could not be happier with the results of the training our dog Jarvis received from Jake at A Leg Up K9. We adopted Jarvis from a local shelter when he was about 6 months old. We were immediately smitten with this energetic, smart and loving pup. By the time Jarvis was a year old he was quite large, about 75 pounds and while he still had the most amazing personality he was a bit difficult to control at times and with 3 young kids we needed help so that we could all live in harmony together. Jake to the rescue! Jarvis stayed with Jake for a couple of weeks while we were on vacation to receive his training. When we returned Jake met with my whole family and helped us learn how to continue to work with Jarvis and utilize his newly acquired skills. My kids are ages 11, 9 and 5. I'm so happy that they got to be part of the follow up training sessions and learn more about Jarvis' behaviors and his training. My entire family has been able to more fully enjoy the companionship of Jarvis with no more stress. Jarvis is also so proud of himself – it's been neat to see a new side of his personality come out now that he clearly understands expectations and rules of the house. He's still the same goofy fun loving pup but without the chaos and mayhem. I highly recommend A Leg Up K9. Thank you Jake!

We have seen a couple of Jake's trained dogs in our neighborhood. Their owners referred us with our Australian Shepherd pup. He is a happy, energetic, young boy, that we love! We wanted him off-leash trained and were prepared to do our part of learning how to communicate appropriately so we could be successful. It is a learning curve – and we are all still practicing some of the commands. This investment in our dog is totally worth it! Jake @ A Leg Up K9 is skilled in training dogs, and their humans. We are very happy with the results thus far and look forward to working with Jake more in the future. (No I didn't pose him, he's naturally that handsome! 😉 )

When we decided to bring our Australian Shepherd/Husky mix puppy, Luna, to Jake we were feeling extremely hopeless. She was a nightmare at home, on the leash and in the car. We tried everything we could, but nothing seemed to work on her. She was extremely stubborn and simple daily tasks were difficult, if not impossible to accomplish at home. However, when we went to pick her up after the 2 week training program it was like we got a different dog back. She was no longer uncontrollable, she wasn't trying to dislocate our arm when she was on the leash and was now a fully controlled pup. Even in the car she is now perfectly behaved. It's been a few weeks since we have had her back and our lives are significantly better. There is still work to be done with her, but Jake's advice and quick responses to our questions have helped us learn how to properly handle her.
