About Canine In Focus Dog & Puppy Training

In-home private training across the greater Rockford area

Canine In Focus is an in-home and virtual training practice rather than a drop-off facility, covering, per its FAQ, "the Greater Rockford area, including Roscoe, Rockton, Cherry Valley, Machesney Park, Loves Park, Belvidere, Poplar Grove, Candlewick, and South Beloit," with virtual sessions for clients outside that service area. Work starts with an initial consultation of 60-90 minutes covering the dog's behavior, environment and goals; every session after that is 60 minutes.

Method and honesty about limits

The site describes "reward-based, humane training methods" built on modern behavior science, using "a lot of treats, toys and play." It is notably careful about claims: asked whether it guarantees results, the site answers that it "cannot ethically offer guarantees, as behavior is influenced by many factors outside anyone's control, including health, history, and genetics." Board and train is offered "on a very limited basis and only for puppies up to four months old."

A credentialed team

The about page names a team rather than a single trainer. Yasmin Baylor is listed as KPA-CTP, CPDT-KA and CSAT – a graduate of the Karen Pryor Academy, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer through the CCPDT, and a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer under Malena DeMartini's program – and as a board member at large and training consultant for PAWS Humane Society. Adrienne Kelenc is listed as KPA-CTP, ABCDT and CNWI, having completed the Karen Pryor Academy professional dog training program in 2020 plus trick dog and nose work instructor certifications. Maddy Schone-Knoll is listed as a certified Family Dog Mediator, and Elycia Tenney as office manager, a CPDT-KA and an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator. Specialties named on the site include puppy training, basic skills and manners, behavior coaching, separation anxiety, reactivity and fear, leash skills, virtual training and nature walks.
