About Genetic Canine

Genetic Canine – Genetic K9 on its own site – trains from 407B Middle Country Road in Coram, on the main east-west road through Brookhaven. It carries one of the largest review counts of any trainer in this metro.

Who runs it

The founder is Amanda, and her line about the work sets the tone: 'Dog training isn't a job or a hobby – it's a lifestyle.' Her training lineage is published: she 'would spend the next ten years apprenticing under Master Trainer John Browne and would go on to create a board and train program, along with one of the best puppy raising/training programs on the island'. Browne runs The K-9 Center in Hauppauge, so this is a second-generation Suffolk training practice rather than an import.

Method and philosophy

The stated approach is about staying current: 'you'll work with trainers who are constantly learning new skills and methods all while being focused on improving communication with both client and canine.' The reasoning is that the owner is the real student – 'the more knowledge we have to offer you, the better handler you'll be' – and the site notes that 'over the last 30 years, the dog training world has changed drastically and that means you need trainers who are constantly looking to evolve and grow.'

What is offered

The published structure is training packages, group classes, an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program, and seminars. One feature is distinctive: the relationship is designed not to end at graduation – 'even after you are done training, we always hope to foster a long-lasting relationship so we can continue to help you and your dog grow through our lifetime group classes.' Client testimonials on the site name reactivity and aggression as the presenting problems – one describes a dog who 'could not walk on a leash or be in sight of other people/dogs' now attending group classes.

Alongside the training

Genetic Canine also sells raw food, promoting 'a raw feeding diet… produced right here in a USDA inspected facility where we can offer custom blends'. Photoshoots and a blog round out the site. Contact runs through amanda@genetick9.com and 631-624-5163.
