About Gold Coast K-9 Inc

Gold Coast K-9 is Nicholas Messina's practice, listed on Todd Drive North in Glen Head on the North Shore, and it sells a board-and-train program alongside ongoing owner coaching. The site is explicit about the three problems it takes on by name: obedience, leash manners and reactivity.

How the trainer describes the work

The About page is written in the first person and is more essay than sales page. Messina says he has been training dogs full time for the last decade and thinks of the work as a practice – 'something that is perpetually changing with time'. His stated starting point is taking inventory of both the individual dog's needs and the owner's, on the argument that the relationship is an intersection where both parties arrive with their own needs, and that honoring all of them is where the work actually is.

Concepts over commands

The most distinctive published idea is a deliberate step back from obedience as the goal. The site says that while most trainers focus on behavior and obedience, concepts have become more important in this practice, and that teaching basic behaviors is what creates the opportunity to arrive at those concepts. Building and implementing a communication system between dog and owner is described as the key task, and the framing throughout is parenting outside your own species.

The board and train, from the client side

The reviews the business publishes describe a residential program with near-daily video updates sent home – a five-month Belgian Malinois sent for board and train, a pug whose household describes itself as having been in chaos before a multi-week stay. Both accounts also mention continuing to work with the trainer afterward, which matches the site's emphasis on the owner's side of the relationship.
