Heartland Pet Resort is at 1840 280th St. in Spencer, Iowa, between Spencer and the Iowa Great Lakes, 3-1/2 miles west of Fostoria. Owned by Eric and Miranda, it offers boarding, daycare, training and grooming, and lists membership in the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers). Resort manager Kara Burd helps teach the Wednesday night basic obedience classes, one-on-one lessons and board and train, and holds certifications in infectious disease management, canine body language and behavior, and safe group play and enrichment.

Training and prices

Basic Obedience is a 5 week group class of about six dogs for puppies 16 weeks and older and adult dogs, covering leave it, heel, come, sit, down, stay, no jump and no bark, for $125. Individual lessons for issues like chewing, digging, food aggression, biting or housebreaking are $65 for up to an hour. Day training, daycare with refresher sessions, is $45 per day. A 5 week Canine Good Citizen class ending in the AKC test is $80.

Board and train

Week training runs Monday to Friday with boarding and a private owner lesson: 1 week is $570 standard or $645 premium, 2 weeks $1250 or $1430, 3 weeks $1875 or $2160, and 5 weeks $3100 or $3600. Training can be added to any boarding stay for $45 per day.
