About K9 Partners for Patriots, Inc.
Service dogs for veterans
K9 Partners for Patriots is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Brooksville that pairs veterans living with PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI) or military sexual trauma (MST) with rescue dogs, then guides each team through a hands-on service dog training program at no cost to the veteran. It was founded in 2014 by Certified Master Dog Trainer Mary Peter, its Founder and Executive Director of Training Operations.
The 6-month program
Veterans train with their dog from day one. Dogs from shelters and rescues are evaluated and matched on temperament and compatibility, and in some cases a veteran may bring a dog they already own if it meets program requirements. Certified trainers lead a structured program covering obedience, public access, service tasks and teamwork. Acceptance is based on a clinical diagnosis of PTSD, TBI or MST. An in-house licensed clinical social worker offers free counseling, and foster families help evaluate rescue dogs.
Campus
The campus at 15322 Aviation Loop Dr. includes practice settings built like a pet store, a doctor's office and a cafe. Hours are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 am to 3 pm; phone (352) 397-5306.
