About K9 Zen Dog Training LLC

Force-free training on a working farm

K9 Zen describes its purpose as helping dogs and owners achieve a better bond through positive reinforcement, and says it uses only rewards-based techniques. Its behavior modification programs are aimed at aggression, separation anxiety and fear, combining techniques so dogs learn new coping mechanisms and build positive associations.

Programs

Four are listed. One-on-one private training gives each family a custom plan. Board and train is described as a two to three week intensive with round-the-clock camera access to the kennel, a half-way visit encouraged, an initial consultation on goals and expectations, and a follow-up in-home visit to help with the transition. A reactivity program for leash, people and noise reactivity starts in the client's home and then moves to the farm, where triggers are worked at a safe distance. Consulting is offered for owners who are not ready to hire a trainer or who want help choosing a puppy.

Facility and trainer

The facility is described as a seven acre property in McHenry, Illinois with several fenced pastures, a large boarding building, and indoor and outdoor training grounds allowing work at different levels of distraction; capacity is deliberately limited. Boarding guests are housed in converted horse stalls with large cots rather than cages, again with camera access. The about page introduces Ali Phillips as owner and head trainer, citing a background in veterinary care as the source of her perspective on the science of behavior, and stating a commitment to force-free, reward-based, ethical training. The page also introduces the working dogs – Trooper, who works with reactive dogs, Cooper, used for temperament testing, and Nutmeg, a demo dog for public events – and memorializes two dogs who have died. The site lists Pets for Vets and Toller Rescue Inc. as organizations it supports.
