About Louisiana SPCA
Group dog training classes in New Orleans
The Louisiana SPCA in New Orleans runs group dog training classes at 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd., with trainers who help owners with everything from everyday manners to more challenging behaviors. Classes teach owners to communicate with their dogs through positive reinforcement training methods.
Manners classes
Basic Manners suits dogs of any age, "whether they are 10 months or 10 years old," and covers sit, down, place, recall and impulse control, along with body language and how to fit training into a daily routine. Beyond Basic Manners builds on that foundation with leash walking skills, coming on command and walking past distractions. Basic Manners 3 adds duration, distance and higher distraction levels, loose leash walking, stays, polite greetings, chaining behaviors and off-leash responsiveness when appropriate. Each of these courses is five sessions for a $150 registration fee, and dogs must be non-reactive and able to work around other dogs.
Reactive Rover and Puppy Preschool
Reactive Rover I and II are for dogs who bark, lunge or growl at other dogs on walks. Over six weekly 60-minute small-group sessions, owners work on triggers, reducing reactivity, focus in distracting environments and emergency management, for a $250 registration fee. Puppy Preschool is for puppies 5 months or younger and covers impulse control, proper play and socialization.
