About OverWatch K9 Academy

What they do

OverWatch K9 Academy publishes group puppy classes, private lessons, several board-and-train programs (Puppy Board And Train, Obedience Board & Train, Puppy Raise & Train, and a program called Ribbons & Results), and in-home options including in-home puppy lessons, private lessons for adult dogs and a two-hour puppy consultation. Board-and-train includes complimentary door-to-door transportation.

Method

The stated philosophy is “We believe dogs should be excited to be obedient.” The academy trains in drive, using motivation and meaningful rewards to build enthusiasm for working with the handler, then pairs that with clear communication, guidance and fair accountability. It explicitly rejects a one-size-fits-all system, saying it looks at “the individual dog’s genetics, temperament, and motivation to determine how they learn best,” aiming at “a dog that wants to work with you and can reliably perform when it matters.”

Background

The academy is led by Joey Morris, described on its own about page as an animal behaviorist and professional trainer with more than 30 years working with animals, including species from orcas and wolves to birds of prey, and training and supplying working K9s for law enforcement and government applications.
