About Pawsitive Beginnings Dog Training

Pawsitive Beginnings Dog Training publishes one town in its own footer – Durham, NC – alongside a text-only phone number, an email address and opening hours of Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Its address is a Research Triangle Park suite in Durham. New clients are directed to one starting point: booking a behavior evaluation.

An approach defined by what it leaves out

Most trainers describe their method by what they do. This one leads with three things it does not, under the heading "Providing an Alternative Approach", and it publishes a reason for each. No shock collars: the site asks what happens "in cases where a shock collar dies, or is not handy", and says the aim is "a more organic communication method between you and your dog". No clickers: the same argument, applied to a tool that may not be to hand when you need it. And minimal treats – the site notes that treats are commonly used in training and says it chooses instead to "optimize communication by decreasing your dog's expectation of a treat for good behavior".

That is an unusual position to state so plainly, and it is worth reading carefully rather than as a slogan: it is not a claim to be force-free, and it is not a claim to be balanced. It is an argument about dependence on equipment and rewards, and it is the clearest thing the business publishes about how it works.

Training

The published training line is Training Packages, described as learning "how to command attention, by better communicating with your dog using basic obedience". Attention work and basic obedience are what the business names; ask what else the packages cover.

The rest of the business

Three further services are named in the site's own navigation – Pupcation, a PAWLISH-up Course, and Drop In and Walk Services – each with its own booking request form. Ask what each one includes. The drop-in and walking side is evidently long-standing: the business trades from a web address built around walks.

How it started

The site tells the origin directly. In 2016 a Pit and Pointer Hound mix named Peaches came into the trainer's life by accident. Noticing the two-month-old puppy's shy demeanor, under-confident movements and lack of leadership, the two worked out alternative methods of leash-training walks together, and the trainer drew on prior experience to build a method that uses no shock collars, no clickers and no treats. The business is named for that beginning.

What they can help with

Sit, stay, recall and reliable commands, from beginner to advanced.
