About Peoria Obedience Training Club

A club, not a company

Peoria Obedience Training Club states its mission as “Educating dogs and their owners by providing training and events.” The about page says POTC “has been devoted to dogs and the people who love them since 1946 (now celebrating 75 years!)” — the site's own wording, quoted rather than converted into a figure. It is explicit about how the teaching is staffed: “POTC's instructors are volunteers – there are no paid employees. So you can be sure your instructors are doing what they love: helping you and your dog.” Membership, the site says, “includes AKC judges, veterinarians, vet techs, professional handlers, kennel managers, trainers and groomers.”

Classes and sports

The services pages describe six lanes. Obedience is presented as “the foundation for a happy, well mannered pet,” with classes at various levels plus AKC and UKC sanctioned trials. Agility is described as “an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training, and teamwork.” Rally is described as a course of “10 to 20 stations, depending on the level,” where “perfect heel position is not required.” Flyball is a relay race the club runs as a team in UFLI tournaments, with practices the site says are “usually, Sat. mornings at 7:30am.” Conformation classes are offered “for individuals interested in presenting their dogs at AKC or UKC conformation shows.” Freestyle is described as “a mixture of obedience training, tricks, and dance.” An AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy class is listed in the site navigation.

The building

The club describes a facility with a “full handicap-accessible, regulation size” setup in its own words: “Our building is climate controlled with a sound absorbing system; accessible to people with disabilities; and new 1 1/4" rubber matting.” It also lists “plenty of free parking in our well-lit lot, crating space when available, and acres of mowed lawn where dogs may be exercised,” and adds that guests “are welcome to come see our classes in action.” Signup nights and the class schedule are posted on the home page.
