Schaferhund Schutzhund Club
Overview
About Schaferhund Schutzhund Club
Schaferhund Schutzhund Club is based on Parkside Drive in Saint James, in the Smithtown corner of this metro. Schutzhund – now more usually called IGP – is a three-part dog sport combining tracking, obedience and protection work, historically associated with the German Shepherd; a Schutzhund club is a training group whose members work their own dogs toward titles in it, rather than a commercial school that trains other people's pets.
Who it suits
If you are a pet owner looking for obedience help or work on a behavior problem, a sport club is probably not what you want, and there are several trainers within a short drive of Saint James – in Nesconset, Hauppauge, Smithtown and Centereach – who publish exactly what they do. If you are interested in the sport itself, or you have a working-line dog whose drives need an outlet, a local club is the right door to knock on: contact them directly on the published number to ask about training days, membership, and whether they take new handlers and green dogs.
Practical note
Club training typically happens on fixed days at a fixed field, is run by member volunteers rather than paid staff, and expects the handler to do the work rather than hand the dog over. Ask about the schedule and the trial calendar before assuming it will fit around a working week.
