Scheurman's K9 Academy is a Jacksonville dog training school led by Wallace Scheurman, a Certified Master Dog Trainer and American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. The academy says it was established in 1988 and moved to Florida in 1992, and credits its staff with over 45 years of experience training dogs for law enforcement, detection, search and rescue and civilian obedience. It has two certified master dog trainers and two AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluators on staff.
Programs
All breeds and ages train in group classes, private lessons or board and train programs (Doggie Boot Camp), with airport pickup at Jacksonville International for dogs sent from farther away. Courses cover basic, intermediate and competition obedience for AKC and UKC Novice, Open, Utility and Rally, plus AKC Puppy Star, Canine Good Citizen, Community and Urban CGC. Specialty training includes personal protection, therapy dogs, service dogs, search and rescue, Schutzhund, French Ring and canine first aid and CPR classes. Law enforcement programs include detection, patrol and apprehension dogs. Problem solving covers many forms of aggression, plus digging, barking, jumping and house training.
Method
The academy describes its approach as compulsive training based on pack theory, mutual respect and leadership, using positive reinforcement to teach some behaviors and proofing with compulsion, with the stated aim of the least force and the most praise. Its rule is one command, one action.
