About The Distracted Dog

Method

The Distracted Dog is unusually explicit about where it sits on the training spectrum. Its home page states: “we use a balanced system of training utilizing all 4 quadrants of learning. However, our methods aren't 'cookie cutter' and we customize our training according to the dogs needs and our customers goals!” The stated mission is “to make training as easy and fun as possible because we understand, when you enjoy something it makes it that much easier to stay consistent.”

What is offered

The services list on the home page reads: private lessons, board and train, group classes, general boarding, service dog training, and competition obedience. Private lessons are described as helping “you learn how to communicate properly with your dog in a controlled, hands-on” environment. Board and train is described as giving the dog “hands on repetitions with a trainer multiple times a day.” Group classes, the site says, cover “socializing, generalizing behaviors, and even earning titles.” Service area is given as “All of Central Illinois,” with hours listed as Monday to Sunday, 9am to 6pm.

How you start

The site sets out a three-step intake: fill out a request form or call; attend an evaluation where, in its words, “we will meet with you and your dog to get a good assessment of your dogs starting point, as well as go over your specific goals” and from which a program, duration and cost are recommended; then book. The evaluation is advertised as free. The site frames the typical client either as someone with “a new dog” who wants to be proactive or someone “experiencing behavior problems,” and lists the complaints it hears — jumping on guests, not settling, poor recall, and struggling “to pay attention to you around distractions.”

Experience as stated

The home page carries the heading “OVER 10 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE” and states that “our Trainers here at The Distracted Dog have over 25 Years of combined experience varying from house manners all the way through competition obedience.”
