About Understanding Your Dog, LLC

Understanding Your Dog, LLC works from South Fulton Street in Salisbury, on the southern edge of the metro's reach, and is run by Theresa Pitner. The mission it states is plain: "help people and their dogs have the best relationship possible".

What is on the menu

Private one-on-one sessions where owner and dog learn together; group classes aimed at strengthening the bond and building social skills; a Doggo Drop Off School for daytime training; and a Fast-Track option. There are also special events – Let's Talk Dog seminars, a free online dog talk, and a two-part trick training workshop. Dog walking and full-service grooming are separate services from the same business, and the site even offers the venue for a child's birthday party.

The perspective behind it

The about page explains the approach through the trainer's previous career: her 20-plus years as a social worker gave her the view that teaching the human is the first step toward improving the relationship with the family dog. Her own summary is "Training that Makes Sense". She has worked with people and their dogs since her family moved to Salisbury in 2000, and the site's argument to owners is that a dog is always learning whatever its age.

Credentials

The site publishes ABCDT and CPDT-KA after her name, plus AKC Certified S.T.A.R. Puppy and Canine Good Citizen. The CPDT credential is confirmed against the CCPDT North Carolina certificant list, which records Theresa Ann Pitner in Salisbury; she is also listed in the APDT North Carolina trainer search under the same town.
