The facility describes itself as the number one veterinary-recommended training facility in the Wabash Valley, and the training side is led by Mariah, a certified trainer and AKC Evaluator. Her background is unusual and directly relevant: ten years as a veterinary assistant alongside more than nine years training and handling dogs. The veterinary side of that résumé matters more than it might appear — a trainer who has spent a decade in clinical settings has seen a great deal of what medical issues, pain and age look like when they present as behavior problems, which is a category of misdiagnosis that costs owners a lot of wasted training.

The AKC Evaluator credential is the second concrete piece. It means the CGC and related titles can be tested and awarded on site, so a class does not just teach the material — it ends in a recognized certification.

Training Approach

Group sessions meet monthly at Deming Park in Terre Haute for a warm-up on canine agility and fitness equipment or social obedience, followed by a long group walk around the park — which is real-world proofing rather than classroom repetition. Several of the AKC programs are explicitly built around behavior in public: Community Canine tests in natural settings rather than simulations, and Urban Canine covers city living, sidewalk navigation and apartment manners.

Programs & Services

**Foundation obedience.** First Steps Obedience is the entry course, a six-session group class covering sit, down, heel and recall — the basic household set, taught with the handler present.

**The AKC ladder.** This is the school's signature. Canine Good Citizen is offered as an intermediate obedience class culminating in the ten-step CGC test. Community Canine builds on it with real-world testing. Urban Canine addresses city and apartment life. **Therapy and service dogs.** Therapy dog training is offered, along with service dog evaluation — a temperament assessment of a candidate dog before anyone invests in a long training program. The facility has also stated a goal of providing service dogs to people who need them at a fraction of what large organizations charge, by rescuing suitable candidate dogs from local humane shelters.

No protection, bite work, or personal-defense training is offered.

Location & Setting

Fruitridge Avenue puts the facility on Terre Haute's east side, convenient to the residential neighborhoods between the Indiana State University area and the eastern edge of the city, and reachable from Rose-Hulman and the US 40 corridor. Deming Park, used for the monthly outdoor group sessions, is a short distance away and is the city's main park — a genuinely useful training environment with paths, other dogs, and unpredictable distractions.

Demand is a practical consideration. The facility has at times been booked roughly a month out for consultations and training, so owners should plan on lead time rather than expecting to start next week.

What Sets Them Apart

The range is the headline. Between the AKC ladder, behavior modification, nose work, therapy and service work, a puppy program, private and in-home options and a virtual assessment, there is a defined path here for almost any goal short of protection work or a residential program — and that is far more than any other Terre Haute provider publishes.

The credential set is the second point: an on-staff AKC Evaluator means titles can be earned and tested in-house, and a decade of veterinary-assistant experience gives the behavior side a grounding that a purely training-track background does not provide.
