About Humane Society of Western Montana

The Humane Society of Western Montana is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal shelter on Highway 93 S in Missoula that offers training and behavior services alongside adoption, lost and found, spay and neuter, vaccinations and a pet food pantry. In 2025 it reports serving 4,798 pets and completing 1,201 adoptions.
Training philosophy
HSWM advocates training that rewards desired behaviors and manages undesirable ones with clear, consistent instruction, and it opposes cruel or harsh methods and equipment that can cause harm or distress. Its trainers use positive, dog-friendly methods and teach dogs to respond to verbal cues and hand signals. All HSWM trainers complete a formal training process and receive certifications such as Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT) or equivalent.
Programs
Instructors have experience from puppy socialization and basic manners to behavior modification for reactive and fearful dogs. Training and behavior services include Puppy Kindergarten and a behavior helpline with resources for owners.
