A Better Dog Training is a Bulverde-based trainer founded in 2007 by Jan Echavarry, who is credited with over 20 years of hands-on experience. Jan completed a professional dog training program through PetSmart and graduated from a hands-on training school in California. She gives dog training seminars at the Bulverde Spring Branch Library and Career Day talks at local schools, often with her trained yellow Labrador, Troy.

In-home training

The business specializes in in-home training within about one hour of Bulverde, including New Braunfels, Blanco, Spring Branch and Converse. Puppy training starts at 10 weeks and covers basic obedience, socialization, crate training and housebreaking foundations, and older dogs get help with jumping, leash pulling, mouthing and aggression.

Board and train

Dogs six months and older can join a board and train of at least 4 weeks covering crate training, house manners, socialization and obedience. Pickup includes a 3-hour transfer session for the household, followed by unlimited lifetime follow-ups by text, email or in person. Payment is split 50% at drop-off and 50% at pick-up.

Method

Jan uses Balanced Reward-Based Training: rewards teach new behaviors, and corrections are introduced once a behavior is understood but not followed.
