About Adventure Bound Canines

Adventure Bound Canines is Jess Vellella's business on Bradshaw Road in Salem. The site describes it as "locally owned, fully licensed and insured, specializing in providing force free, fear free, reward based dog training and care services", with the stated goal of "connecting the wild that lives within your dog to the natural world by providing enriching, breed-specific outdoor experiences."

Private training

The training service is one-to-one: "Private dog training based on up to date, behavioral science. No fear. No pain. No confusion." An initial consultation goes through the dog's history, behavior issues and current management plan; sessions use in-person demonstration and owner coaching and are followed up in writing with observations, resources and next steps. It suits anyone "working on a new skill, refreshing an old one, troubleshooting behavior issues or need help with a new puppy". Pricing is published: "Initial Consultation $150/hr" with follow-up lessons at $125 an hour, and mileage charged beyond twenty miles.

Day camp and boarding

Day Camp is not a daycare in the usual sense – playgroups are built by assessing each dog's temperament, size, play style and exercise needs, and the day includes impulse control work, enrichment, field trips, structured rest and individual training time. It is $60 a day. Adventure Boarding is $75 a day and includes either an adventure or a day camp place. Both require approval before booking and a free meet and greet.

The trainer

She graduated Whole Dog Academy in Portland, Oregon in 2020 after a ten-year career in early childhood education, and the site says she "saw a need for certified, positive reinforcement trainers in the Roanoke area."

Equipment

The site carries a standing note that "Adventure Bound Canines does not use or endorse the use of electronic shock collars", clarifying that collars visible in its photographs are for GPS and tracking only.
