About Bull Valley Retrievers

Retriever and gun dog training in Woodstock

Bull Valley Retrievers describes itself as specializing "in obedience training all breeds, building competitive retrievers, producing quality gun dogs and obedient companion dogs," and calls itself "your overall retriever training source." The site says it deliberately handles only a limited number of dogs at one time so each gets a truly custom program, and notes a secondary location in southern Illinois. It also displays a 2019 Best of Woodstock award.

Training programs

Foundation and obedience work is framed as the base for everything else – sit, stay, here/come and heel. Companion gun dog training exposes the dog to hunting situations alongside basic obedience, covering game birds, scenting, tracking and flushing for upland work, steadiness for the duck and goose blind, and force fetch for a smooth delivery to hand. Waterfowl training is published as a long sequence: yard work, early field work, force fetch, fetch from a pile and from multiple piles, e-collar conditioning, marking and casting drills, swim-by, steadying, decheating and beginning blinds. Upland training and hunt test training for all AKC and UKC levels are listed separately. One-on-one sessions run a minimum of one hour, on the training grounds or at the client's location.

Owner and record

The about page is signed "Joe Scarpy – Owner / Dog Trainer" and lists a long competitive record in pheasant and partridge championships through the late 1990s and early 2000s, plus club offices held and television and radio appearances. Dog boarding is offered alongside training; the site states kennel cough vaccine and boosters must be current, and that boarding and training deposits are non-refundable unless the reservation can be filled.
