About Fetch ! Dog Training

"The fun, positive approach to training and loving your family dog"

Fetch! Dog Training uses that line as its tagline, and the home page explains the name: fetch is a way to bond with a dog, but it is also a training opportunity, because in one session an owner can practice sit, wait, eye contact, fetch, come and drop it. As the page puts it, "the great part about Fetch is that it doesn't even feel like you are training, but with so many repetitions, your dog is learning and building on those behaviors each time!"

What is offered

The home page lists in-home private lessons, described as the most in-depth offering and a way to get one-on-one attention; group classes, with the site saying "In Group Lessons, I train you to train your dog" and offering options by dog age, experience and class length; and remote consultations by phone or video, presented as an alternative for a quick refresher on a behavior or issue. The site's own menu also lists a day training program and a puppy playtime session, along with FAQs, a newsletter and a private lesson territory page.

Method

The about page states that Fetch! uses positive reinforcement training methods and focuses on the key concepts of motivation, consistency and timing. It describes positive reinforcement as one of the four quadrants of operant conditioning developed by B.F. Skinner, and explains the approach as adding something to make a desirable behavior happen more often, beginning with food rewards during the initial phase of learning and phasing food out as behaviors become more reliable, maintained with life rewards, praise and the occasional food. The same page is explicit about limits: "Fetch! never uses fear or physical punishment during training, including the use of prong, choke or shock collars." A client testimonial on that page names Nancy as the trainer and credits her with engaging the whole family in the training.
