About Greg Edgar School For Dogs Llc
The Greg Edgar School for Dogs is the training arm of Plainsview Country Kennels on Plains Road in Wallkill, and the two share a site, a phone number and an eleven-acre property. The kennel describes itself as "family owned and operated", opened in 1990 and expanded to its current location in 1997, with a 17,000 square foot climate-controlled building added in 2001, indoor themed play rooms, outdoor exercise yards, a swimming pool and owners living on the premises for round-the-clock care.
The trainer
The training page is unusually specific about credentials. Greg Edgar is described as a certified member of the American Federation of Professional Dog Trainers and a canine behavior specialist since 1987, who has trained over 4,000 dogs across all breeds and has worked in behavior, competition obedience and protection. The page also states that local veterinarians consult him for temperament assessments and aggression cases. His own line about the work is: "Remember its experience that counts! We don't practice on your dog, we train him – GUARANTEED IN WRITING."
The programs
Four are published. Puppy Training, for dogs of eight to fifteen weeks, covers nutrition, socialization, housebreaking and crate training, either at the school or in the home. Behavioral Consultations are open to all ages and breeds and can be taken by phone, at the school or in-home, and are framed around the psychological and environmental factors behind a behavior. Basic Obedience Training, for dogs of sixteen weeks and up, is on-leash foundation work described as "positive, humane, fun and motivational", taught with hand signals and voice commands. Advanced Obedience Training moves that off leash, with the page describing control at up to 400 feet without distractions. Private lessons and semi-private group classes of no more than four dogs are also offered, and an evaluation is free.
Where it draws from
The published service area is wide for a facility-based school – Bergen, Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Dutchess and Westchester counties plus Manhattan – which is consistent with a boarding kennel that trains as well as boards.
One thing to check first
The training page carries its own notice that the school is not currently accepting new training clients because of limited availability. That is published by the business itself and may change, so the honest advice is to call (845) 895-8118 and ask before planning around it. The boarding and daycare side of the property operates separately.
