About Humane Society of the Treasure Coast
Shelter with training classes
The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) is a 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization at 4100 SW Leighton Farm Ave in Palm City. Founded in 1955, it describes itself as the only open access, no-kill animal welfare organization in Martin County, and it rehomes over 2,000 animals a year. Alongside adoptions it offers behavior and obedience training classes for the public.
Classes
Most classes run 6 weeks, meet for an hour on the same day each week and are limited to six people (eight with an assistant). A course costs $150 for first-time participants and $120 for shelter adopters and returning students. Options include Puppy S.T.A.R. (Socialization, Training, Activity, Responsibility) for pups 7 months and younger, Puppy Agility Fun for Puppy S.T.A.R. graduates, and Basic Obedience covering sit, down, stay, recall, waiting at doorways and leash walking. Private one-on-one sessions teach positive reinforcement and proactive training methods at $60 per hour. The donor-funded Pawsitive Manners Club offers lower-cost classes to those who qualify.
