About K-10 Dog Training

Who runs it

K-10 Dog Training is run by Kathy Shumway Lawton from 161 Lee Rd, Mexico, NY 13114. She introduces herself directly: "Hi, I'm Kathy Shumway Lawton, owner of K-10 Dog Training in Mexico, NY. Dogs have been a lifelong passion for me". Her main service area is published as "Oswego, Jefferson and Onondaga Counties".

Background and credentials

She writes that her "professional dog training journey began in 2007 and includes certifications from the Karen Pryor Academy, CPDT-KA, and a Service Dog Coach certification." She also says she is currently working through "a concentrated program through the Karen Pryor Academy which will hopefully result in certification as a Behavioral Consultant" – a qualification in progress, not one she holds.

What she works on

In her own words: "I specialize in positive reinforcement, science-based methods and focus on everything from manners training to behavior modification and aggression issues." She has also fostered and adopted a long line of dogs of her own, which is where the site's account of her experience starts.

What clients mention

The testimonials on the site are specific about the work. One describes preparation for Canine Good Citizen testing: "It truly was a privilege to work with Kathleen and I can't thank her enough for working me and Leela through all the necessary CGC practical skills prior to testing." Another describes a puppy that "had enough energy for 4 dogs, and was unable to walk on a leash" and is now, in that reviewer's words, among "the best behaved dogs" (the sentence is published with a typo, "one one the best behaved dogs", which is left as they wrote it).
