About Mel’s Mutts VA

The premise

Mel's Mutts VA starts from communication rather than commands. The trainer's stated belief is that communication between dog and owner is often misunderstood and that owners are frequently sending the wrong message, and that the right training and awareness lets both sides, in her phrase, speak the same language.

Method

The approach is described as positive and reward-based. The trainer says she lays a foundation for the owner to build on, using positive reinforcement, plenty of treats and affection.

Training

The training offer covers puppy work – from choosing the next dog through housebreaking and crate training – along with basic obedience, commands and general house manners, plus help with leash walking and being more social with other dogs. Every engagement begins with a free consultation to meet owner and dog and understand the training needs.

Agility

Agility is presented as its own service, described as a playground for dogs where owner and dog learn together to tackle obstacles and build trust, from tire jumps onward.

Dog walking

The business originated in dog walking, and that service continues. The stated reasoning connects it back to training: a dog that has had exercise during the day is typically better behaved when its owners return home.

Practical details

The business publishes testimonials, a products page and a contact form, and operates from Powhatan.
