About Schilling’s Northwest Lawdog
Ken Schilling's training base
Schilling's Northwest Law Dogs is a dog training business on Glaze Road in Veneta, about 17 miles west of Eugene. It is the home of trainer Ken Schilling, who is credited with more than 30 years of experience training all breeds of dogs for the military, police, personal protection, obedience, behavior modification and assistance.
Background
Ken got started training dogs in 1973 when he joined the U.S. Military, where dogs were trained to find snipers, ordnance and weapons and for search and rescue. He later ran his own kennel and trained and handled dogs in drug interdiction for the U.S. Customs Service before training dogs for the general public. In 1995 he moved to Oregon, where he and his wife Lynn opened Schilling's Northwest Law Dogs. His achievements list includes a Master Trainer/Instructor diploma in Obedience and Protection and U.S. Customs canine courses.
Method
Ken calls his approach the Schilling's Balanced Method. In his words, balance is everything in dog training, rather than dominance. He works with police dogs as well as pet owners who want a more enjoyable life with their dog, and says his favorite part of the job is "seeing a better dog-human relationship develop."
