You apply first

"Here at Shades of Blu Dog Training, we select our clients very carefully to ensure that the necessary time and effort required is applied to our training program. To qualify, please fill out this brief inquiry form to set up an initial consultation with our lead trainer. You will receive a call back within one week after submitting this form." The home page repeats the instruction: "We are located in Chesapeake, VA – Please fill out application before you call us". Expect a week's wait for the first call, and plan around it.

The program ladder

Four residential and semi-residential options are published. Day training is pitched as the compromise – "Choose from our day training programs that offer the benefits of a Board And Train without having to miss your pup!" Private lessons are "a great option for owners who have time to be hands-on with their dog's training journey." Board and train is the standard immersion – "During a Board & Train Program, your dog comes to stay with us for a fully immersive training retreat." And above it sits the long one: "During a Raise & Train Program, your dog comes to stay with us for an extended and fully immersive training retreat." The booking page lists three-month and four-month Raise & Train options, which is a far longer commitment than anything else in this metro.

The training model

Stated as two halves that both have to happen. First: "We create an individualized plan based on you and your dog's needs. Throughout our training, your dog will learn a new communication system that you will both use for life!" Then: "We teach you everything your dog learned through hands-on practice and demonstration together. We ensure that our clients feel confident and competent in their technique and knowledge." And afterwards: "Training is a journey, not a destination. We are passionate about providing the ongoing support to use what you have learned with us to take your relationship with your dog to the next level, including complimentary group training." Free ongoing group sessions after a paid program are rare and worth weighing against a cheaper headline price elsewhere.

What is worked on

The published problem list includes jumping on guests, dog and human reactivity, separation anxiety, recall and fearful behavior. Other pages cover therapy dogs, emotional support animals, intensive day care and a service helping people choose a dog in the first place.

The wider organization

Two affiliated non-profits are named on the site – a rescue and rehabilitation arm described as "Our movement to end shelter euthanasia for dogs with treatable behavioral challenges", and a service dog organization for female veterans with service-connected disabilities. Those are separate organizations rather than services you book here, but they tell you where the business's priorities sit. The company also runs a Southern California operation under a second head trainer, so confirm who will actually handle your dog in Chesapeake.
