About Southern State K-9 Training LLC

What they do

Southern State K-9 publishes five programs: board and train, one-to-one private lessons, puppy training, service dog training and behavior modification. The most popular board-and-train option is named on the site as the four-week "Good Dog Essentials" program, with other lengths available. The home page banner lists the working scope as board and train, lessons, off leash, behavior, crate training, potty training, leash manners, reactivity, barking and pulling.

How they work

Owner involvement is built into the structure rather than offered as an extra: "While our board and train option is full service we believe it is just as, if not more important to train the owners. We incorporate owners with a lesson at time of pick up as well as a week after you've taken your pup home." Additional lessons and check-ins follow formal training, and clients who train there can later board on a space-available basis with refresher training included. Owners may drop in during a board-and-train stay, and photo and video updates are sent through.

Who trains

The site names Jared Warren, with 10+ years of experience beginning as a special operations K9 handler in the military before moving into pet dogs, and a second trainer, Olivia. The business describes itself as small and veteran-owned, with board-and-train dogs incorporated into the trainers' own families for a smoother transition home.

Where they work

The service dog program is selective — a limited number of candidates each year after evaluation of temperament, workability and disposition. Real-world application is emphasized, with dogs worked "out in public" in highly stimulating environments.
