About starpowerdogtraining
Competition obedience in Somers
Star Power Dog Training is a Somers training program at 230 South Rd, led by Lara Avery, whom it describes as an internationally recognized dog trainer. Its programs run from puppy training to competitive obedience and are individually customized to each dog and handler team.
Method
Star Power describes its philosophy as motivation-based: rather than forcing compliance, it builds a genuine desire in dogs to perform behaviors. It teaches the Hand Touch Heeling Method, a leash- and collar-free heeling approach that uses no traditional leash or collar corrections, and Avery describes her methods as positive, progressive and reward-based.
Trainers
Lara Avery holds an OTCH10 title, has earned OTCH titles with six different dogs, and has won and placed at events including the National Obedience Championship and AKC Obedience Classic. Linda Patenaude brings over 25 years in dog sports, including agility and obedience.
Classes and fees
Weekly classes include Novice Heeling, Open/Utility Competition and Open/Utility Skills. A 6-week session is $200, and drop-in classes are $40 each with advance permission. Private sessions are available in person or online, along with online courses, obedience workshops and livestock training.
