What they offer

VFR Veterans & First Responders trains service dogs with their handlers, free of charge for eligible veterans, active-duty military and first responders in Southern California. Civilians who do not meet the eligibility rules can still use its services for standard fees.

Classes and training

A beginner basic obedience program on Sunday mornings covers obedience, walking skills, task training for PTSD alert and public-access readiness, and includes AKC Canine Good Citizen testing. An intermediate urban access course builds service dog tasks such as PTSD alert, medication reminders, retrieval and stability assistance, and practices public transit and busy public settings, along with education on ADA rights and responsibilities. Private training starts with a consultation and continues in session packages.

Good to know

The lead trainer is a retired Marine. Dogs with unsafe aggression may be dismissed from the program.
